Building & Earth is providing quality assurance testing for the Tennessee Valley Authority’s project to build a second, larger lock to facilitate boat and barge traffic on the Kentucky Dam in Grand Rivers, Kentucky.

The Kentucky Dam impounds the Tennessee River, creating the 160,000 acre Kentucky Lake, which is the Tennessee Valley Authority’s largest water reservoir and the largest man-made lake in the eastern United States.

The current lock, at 600 feet in length, hosts an average annual traffic flow of 32 million tons of commodities on 4,000 vessels. The new lock will be twice as long, at 1200 feet, and will greatly reduce interference and congestion caused by the Kentucky Dam.
